for me it is the symbol of all symbols. the seed of all seeds. a representation simplified right to the point before it would collapse back into the field.
any esoteric/mystical symbol/representational-object that there is can be related to it.
the 10 spheres of the kab-allah. as well as the three pillars. the ancient cults of the celts, use knots everywhere in their imagery. this particular symbol, if you ask the scholars, originated in tibet. it is translated to be called “the mystic dragon”. i say it is much earlier than that. the egyptians and the sumerians had variations of it that were curved rather than with sharp edges, but still representational of the same in-formation.
it is not the symbol itself, but what it represents.
personally, for me, it represents even certain chemical structures. if one can think of it not only as a 2d representation, but a 3d, and than, if one can visualize it, a 4d and beyond, it can be realized that it is just a slice of a much more complex object. something like a diamond. but a diamond with many more dimensions than the most beautiful and intricate diamond that has ever been cut. simply complex and perplexedly simple.
to me it represents the diamond of the type that is being referenced in the diamond sutra. which is only trying to illustrate that the assumed multi-faceted aspect of reality is only an illusion created by egoic minds, egg-shelled minds operating fractionally. instead of integrating and operating fractally, connectedly, or holistically.
the dots are there, but they aren’t connected. once connected, ONE illuminated. the thousand points of light need to be connected, as in constellations, for example.
so, as bertrand russell would have to agree with gautama, it is a sermon on the monistic truth. the ONE, reality.
it is also a very deceptively simple self-collapsing/self-similar fractal recursion. it can collapse into infinity. it can also unfold out into infinity.
but, i have to remind once again, it is only a representation of the reality, it is just a schema. albeit an all-inclusive one. the closest one i have seen as far as i can remember.
it is the philosopher’s stone, encoded in a 2d slice. it only needs to be extrapolated, or de-compressed.
if it is folded in the right way, which is more than i can show here in this message, it can illustrate quite plainly and immediately, the secret of combining the hexagonal with the pentagonal. because the diamonds, in the properly elongated version of the symbol, become like penrose tiles. those tiles can be folded up to make a representation of the pentagonal falling into the hexagonal. so the 2d representation is hiding a lot of information. but it is still there, when given the space, or the vision, to expand in.

phi (φ), or the “golden ratio” (1.61825..), being related to the fibonacci sequence. as in 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,.. etc. each successive number is the sum of the two immediately preceding it. the higher up one goes in the sequence, it approaches φ as you take the higher number and divide it by the one immediately below it in the sequence. (and the reciprocal (Φ, or 0.618..) is revealed as one divides the lower by the higher). but the twelfth in the series, is 89. that is: 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,.. well the interesting thing is that if you divide unity by 89, that is 1/89, you get a decimal sequence:

Pi (π), of course, even more books can be written on.
the pentagram is ruled by the golden ratio, or lower-case phi (φ). and when it is encircled, you have bound it within Pi (π), the ruling ratio of the circle. making for a very powerfully charged container. it’s basic use in “magick”, as far as i know, is a container for “intent”. the pentagonal wants to expand as it is charged with intent, but the hex, or Pi ratio, contains it and focuses it, making it more powerful through tension as it folds in on itself and starts to generate it’s energy faster. and then of course these can be layered so that you have generators within generators..
think of it in 3d, and you can construct an archimedean truncated icosahedron, or a soccer ball (bucky ball), with 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons, or 32 tiles. and of course on the soccer ball you have the hexagons in white, and the pentas in black. this is also the base structure for C60, or Buckminsterfullerene, as you would have 60 vertices for the carbon atoms to be placed on. again, another whole library of books could be written on it.
anyhow,
the important thing is that these are the two most important ratios in every physical thing in the universe, and every force associated within/without it.
and the 6 (hex) and the 5 (pent) related in this way brings together the two most important transcendental numbers, that is phi (φ) and Pi (π). the 6 and the 5, the hexagonal and pentagonal, are a bridge (=) between these two transcendents. and since they are transcendents, it is a loose (≈) bridge, albeit >99.99% accurate.
the most important molecules for carbon-based life are built on hexagonal benzene rings with six carbon atoms, and rings with 5 carbon atoms, joined together.
the structure for the nucleobase/purine derivatives in DNA. adenine, for one.
adenine from which is also built ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, the individual cells main energy source. absolutely essential for you and anyone else reading this right now to create the biosynthetic reactions necessary to support your physical body as a whole.
different types of sugars. do you like sugar? you should. it is absolutely essential for your physical body to continue to regenerate itself.
this hexa/penta bond structure is also present in serotonin, melatonin, and even DMT. in fact, ALL tryptamine structures, for those of you interested in entheogens. this hexa/penta carbon ring structure is at the center of all of them.
but that is really just barely scratching the surface. i could talk forever about it. because it is forever. it is ALL.
there is much more to it. infinitely much more to it. it is a doorway that leads into the library of all libraries.
it is a representation of the “master equation”, the “theory of everything”. whatever you will call it. and it is sitting right there represented by this ancient symbol.
i say it’s origins go back much further than tibetan buddhism.
and it is a very efficient device for transferring information, just like all symbols are.
as it is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and a symbol is worth a thousand pictures.
very jungian, in that regard.
but it is a representation of the origin of originity. it represents an inescapable aspect of the architecture of the universe. and to me it is beautiful.
my resonance with it is purely preferential i am supposing, and these are only a very few of the more easily explainable reasons as to why/how/what it has as a meaning for me.
